GAME PREPARATION & MANAGEMENT PT.2 : MATCH DAY & GAME MANAGEMENT
Finally the day of the match is arrived. Now is i mportant that all details of what we have prepared will go be executed, so let's start with a quick review of my preparation routine:
1. Review of the game plan
2. Memorize possible scenatios with solutions
3. Remind to players the most important points of the game plan & individual assignments if there are.
4. Adjust mine activation
5. Control & adjust players activation (observe players & warming up)
6. Pay attention to body language
7. Remind the pre-game speech (if you use one)
During the match: plan vs. reality
During the first half of the match, it is necessary to quickly analyse whether everything that we had planned is being fulfilled or whether it is necessary to introduce any modifications to what was planned. All we have to monitor is comparing the match plan that has been prepared with what is happening on the court.
- Are the opponent playing with offensive system & opening game solutions we planned?
- Are the counter measures studied effective?
- Are they playing in defence has we planned? How is out offensive system going?
- Are set pieces effective? how are they defending?
- Is it necessary to modify team's approach? or is necessary to change some player?
- How are going the duels? Cierre/Pivot - Ala/ala?
Those performance indicators that are most closely related to your own match plan and the opponent's match plan must be selected.
Another importabt aspect to consire is: monitoring unforced errors.
Unforced errors can be a symptom that the psychological status is nor the perfect one.. There are three moments in matches when errors can appear: at the start of the match, in the middle of the match or in the final minutes of each half. If they occur in the opening minutes of the match, it is possible that the players' activation level is not ideal. The activation routines must be reviewed: warm-up, pre-match talk or activation at half-time. If unforced errors appear in the middle of the first and second halves, it may be that the players do not have the capacity to maintain concentration for too long. It is time to review the routines that allow us to keep our focus adjusted and help the players to identify the signs that indicate what is happening. Errors in the final part of the match may be related to the athletes' difficulty in copeing with result, fatigue or stress.. This could be time for visualization and breathing techniques. In short, emotional control is essential to perform at the best throughout the match. We must detect in the competition and correct in training the psychological adjustment of the players.
