GAME PREPARATION & MANAGEMENT PT.3 : HALF TIME BREAK
The first half break is very important moment in the game: compare what planned with reality, adjust or create new plan, break a momentum (favorable or unfavorable), many thanks can happen and can be solved
The first thing to do is analyse what happened in the first half. This involves comparing what was planned in the match plan with what actually happened. The coaches' feelings should be confirmed by the statistics that have been collected. I usually enter in dressing room some minutes after the players, because first i share ideas witrh staff, i put in order what i want to say & my emotional status & leave some times to players to talk each other.
The second part of the break should be dedicated to summarising what happened to the players, focusing mainly on solutions & the strategy to adapt for the second half. A short talk should also be planned to psychologically adjust the team to what happened in the first half but also mentalize to the most important that is the second part. Finally, the physiological re-activation of the players before the second half should also be taken into account.
Let's go more in details: What to correct? Things that have been previously trained. The game plan that has been prepared during the week should guide ours instructions. If other things need to be corrected than those trained during the week, perhaps the preparation for the game has not been the best. How much to correct? Little. The fewer things, the better. If we want the players to remember something very important, let's say only key things. The risk of losing all the information they receive increases the more messages they receive. How to correct? Corrections in the form of scolding must be done in private and in training. Never in public and in competition. Can create more tension & loose one or more players definitely from game. We must show great self-control. Excessive activation can lead to making worse decisions and transferring that nervousness to the players. In addition, it is very important to master body language. Who to correct? To the players individually, taking as a reference the specific objectives that have been agreed upon for that match. A set to remark the game points, corrections or game plan.
